Chewa to hold M’bona ceremony in Nsanje
Chewa People in Central Africa coordinator Senior Chief Lukwa of Kasungu says they will hold the M’bona ceremony at Chapilira Village in Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje District in conjunction with Chewa Heritage Foundation in Malawi (Chefo).
He said the ceremony will run from September 24 to 26, where Chewa people and others will celebrate M’bona through, among other activities, offering libation (nsembe).

Said Lukwa: “As you all know, we are going to Mkaika in Katete, Zambia, for the Kulamba ceremony with our beloved leader Kalonga Gawa Undi. We have organised another ceremony of respecting M’bona. We are Chewa and we are really proud of our cultural values and traditions.”
Chefo adviser group village head Kabera of Kasungu said this is an opportunity to unite Chewa people in the country who are allegedly being divided by politics and self-centredness.
The chief said traditional leaders in Kasungu bemoan not being linked with their fellow Chewa chiefs in the Central Region. He said the the M’bona ceremony will offer a platform to unite and walk together as one tribe.
Traditional Authority Ngabu of Nsanje District, who is the custodian of Khulubvi Shrine for M’bona, commended Chefo for recognising the importance of M’bona in their history, which will help youths understand their roots.
“I am pleased that at last our parents have now started to recognise us. We have the Khulubvi Shrine for M’bona, we have Malawi Mountain which was earlier called Maravi and we have Ndindi Marsh,” he said.
